STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand One
A RESOLUTION urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove all unapproved prescription fluoride products from the market.
Whereas, the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires that all prescription drug products be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before they can be lawfully marketed; and
Whereas, these prescription products must have either approved new drug applications or approved abbreviated new drug applications, demonstrating both the safety and effectiveness of such products; and
Whereas, fluoride supplements, such as drops and lozenges, are prescribed for infants, children, and pregnant women to prevent tooth decay; and
Whereas, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved any of these prescription fluoride products as being either safe or effective in reducing tooth decay; and
Whereas, the Merck Index, the Physicians Desk Reference, and the National Toxicology Program, list a wide range of potential side effects from ingesting fluoride; and
Whereas, children, pregnant women, and fetuses are needlessly being exposed to potential side effects by these unapproved products; and
Whereas, it is recognized that children's fluoride supplements contribute to dental fluorisis - a mottling of the teeth ranging from very mild to severe; and
Whereas, pediatricians, dentists, and parents in most cases are unaware that these fluoride products have never been approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness; and
Whereas, a large number of healthcare dollars are being spent annually on unapproved prescription products by parents, taxpayer funded health programs, and insurance companies; now, therefore be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is urged to protect the health of our children and to remove all unapproved prescription fluoride products from the market; and
That copies of this resolution, signed by the speaker of the house and the president of the senate be forwarded by the house clerk to each member of the New Hampshire congressional delegation, the President of the United States, the director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Surgeon General of the United States.
