Committee Function:It shall be the duty of the Committee on Judiciary to consider all matters relating to the judicial system, right-to-know law, guardianships, life and death (such as abortion or assisted death), landlord/tenant rights, civil proceedings, tort law, forfeiture, immunity, and probate; and such other matters as may be referred to it.
Personal Biography
Marjorie Smith earned the degree of master of public administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and focused her professional and personal activities on public policy, working in federal, state and local government, and not-for-profit organizations.
She is currently running for her fourteenth term in the New Hampshire House, representing Durham. She has chaired the House Finance and Fiscal Committees as well as the House Judiciary Committee. She also served on the Public Higher Education Advisory Committee and the board of the University System of New Hampshire.
She was the first chair of the board of the New Hampshire Women's Policy Institute (NHWPI). Before her election she was the national executive director of WAND (Women's Action for New Directions), an organization committed to reordering federal priorities and to increasing women's involvement in elective office.
She worked in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations where she served on the staff of the President's Appalachian Regional Commission, and was the special assistant to the first chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
She chaired, for many years, the Maryland Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, chaired the board of the Maryland Committee for Day Care, and subsequently served on the staff, advocating for availability of and standards for quality child care.
Local Government Involvement
She was the first chair of the Durham Public Library and is the treasurer of the Durham Historic Association.
