Children in crisis, regardless of insurance status, should not be boarded in emergency rooms when we know there are better ways to help them. Death by suicide is the second leading cause of death in NH highschoolers; a terrible and sobering statistic that I can only hope we will work together to continue to address in whatever means necessary. So many of us have been touched by this reality in our personal lives; in my own community there have been several, and I feel each one deeply as a mother who is grateful to have outlived her own difficult teenage years. Government can and should work to help these children so they can outlive this crisis moment and grow into adulthood where many will find increased resilience and gratitude for having navigated the turbulence of youth.
