I strongly oppose SB 552. This bill is yet another attempt to legislate discrimination under the guise of “biological classification,” and it serves no real purpose other than to target and marginalize transgender people. At a time when New Hampshire faces serious challenges—rising property taxes, housing shortages, and pressures on our public schools—the legislature should not be wasting valuable time on bills that exist primarily to stoke fear and division. SB 552 is based on an oversimplified and inaccurate understanding of biology, ignoring the well-documented variations in sex characteristics that exist in the real world. More importantly, it invites the state to police where people go, how they participate in public life, and whether they are treated with dignity. That is not the role of government. Similar proposals have already been vetoed by two governors because they are unnecessary, discriminatory, and harmful. New Hampshire prides itself on fairness and common sense. SB 552 abandons both in favor of political theater aimed at the lowest common denominator. This bill does nothing to improve safety, strengthen communities, or solve any real problem facing Granite Staters. It simply singles out a small and vulnerable group of people for political gain. For those reasons, SB 552 should be firmly rejected.
