I oppose HB1706 because I have worked as a therapist with multiple immigrant families and know the support that is needed during the difficult transition process of fleeing their home and attempting to find a place of safety in the US. In my community of Somersworth we have a thriving immigrant population and it has only increased the connections and thriving businesses in the area. Refugees in the U.S. often pay more in taxes than the cost of their initial resettlement. They fill essential roles in local industries, including retail, tourism, transportation, and education. I believe they significantly benefit the NH economy, culture, and community and so the programs should be continued and funds should continue to be utilized for refugee benefits.
