I would respectfully ask members of the committee to think about the circumstances that prompt people to come to the United States seeking refuge. I have known individuals who arrived with absolutely nothing, many of whom supported our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan at enormous risk to themselves and their families. Surely as human beings we can adhere to the teachings of multiple faiths and provide for those with nothing. Surely as human beings we can respond to the need for housing, language support, education, health care for all - including those with the greatest need. I ask you to respond with empathy, compassion, understanding, and faith as you vote no to this bill.
