The role of the superintendent is one for a highly qualified individual with an education administration background. This is not a position for an elected politician. The superintendent guides the vision of the district and sets education achievement standards, leading the district staff in professional development to meet those standards. The superintendent oversees and supports both the SAU business staff, and the school level administration staff. The superintendent leads collective bargaining negotiations along with the school board volunteer members. The superintendent implements school board policy, as well as ensures policy updates according to new state and federal laws are brought to the school board’s attention. In implementing policy, the superintendent oversees the resolution of employee concerns and parent and student concerns. The superintendent is the face of the district with the community, and also with State and Regional public education associations. Pushing any of these responsibilities onto building level administration, principals who manage the daily logistics of student management and safety, will cause burn out and the loss of very talented educators in New Hampshire. Lastly, school board members are community volunteers who step into public service, with good intentions but often not with the professional backgrounds to run a public school district. Our school board is successful because our superintendent provides us with the relevant information to make decisions and support our students and educators. Please vote ITL on this bill.
