New Hampshire House Bill 1564 is a dangerous and regressive proposal that would erase all references to “gender identity” from state law, effectively stripping transgender and nonbinary people of the basic civil rights protections they currently have. This bill is not about fairness or clarity—it is a direct attack on the dignity, safety, and equality of an already marginalized community. By removing gender identity from anti-discrimination statutes, HB 1564 would open the door to legalized discrimination in employment, housing, health care, and public spaces, forcing transgender residents to live with greater fear and fewer protections. Such a measure doesn’t just roll back progress—it actively promotes intolerance and exclusion. New Hampshire has long prided itself on its values of liberty and justice for all; passing HB 1564 would betray those principles and send a chilling message that some of our neighbors are less deserving of respect, safety, and humanity under the law.
