HB 1442 will not exist only on paper. If enacted, it will shape daily life for real people in this state. Transgender residents — including young people — will read this law and understand that the state has sanctioned their regulation and restriction. You may believe this bill promotes clarity or safety. But laws communicate values. This law communicates that some Granite Staters can be singled out for exclusion under state law. Laws signal who is fully protected — and who must navigate additional barriers. This bill sends that signal clearly. When the state writes targeted restrictions into law, it does not feel abstract to the people affected. It feels personal and causes real life harm.
