Our elderly, indoor-only cat developed a painful, bleeding tumor between her shoulder blades, which we believe was related to a prior rabies vaccination administered at that site. As her condition worsened, her overall health began to deteriorate. Under current state law, she was required to receive another rabies vaccination, something we were unwilling to put her through given her compromised condition. As a result, she was unable to receive certain medical care she urgently needed. Had titer testing been permitted as an alternative, we could have demonstrated that she had existing immunity and posed no risk to the public. She could have received the care she needed, and she might still be here with us today. The experience was devastating. She was a beloved member of our family, and we did everything we could to protect her, but our options were limited by the current law.
