New Hampshire has a clear constitutional obligation to adequately fund public education, and the state must finally honor that responsibility. This bill attempts to undermine recent court decisions that reaffirm the state’s duty to its students and communities. Nearly 90 percent of New Hampshire children attend public schools, yet the current funding system places an unfair burden on local communities and especially on low- and middle-income property taxpayers. Granite Staters overwhelmingly value their public schools and expect the state to fund them fairly and reasonably. This bill runs directly counter to that shared expectation.
