Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a significant toxic threat to aquatic life, particularly in lake and stream ecosystems. Their presence leads to stunted growth, physical deformities in fish larvae, reduced fertility, lower egg survival rates, premature mortality in aquatic insects and fish, and compromised immune systems, increasing vulnerability to disease. Given that coal tar-based sealants contain exceedingly high PAH levels, the State of New Hampshire should establish and enforce stringent regulations concerning their application. Our lakes and waterways are already experiencing numerous environmental pressures.
