I am writing in strong support of HB 1018. Second generation anticoagulant rodenticides are highly persistent and do not stay where they are placed. These poisons move through the food chain, causing secondary poisoning in owls, hawks, eagles, foxes, bobcats, and other wildlife that naturally control rodent populations. Pets and even children are also placed at risk through accidental exposure. These products create a cascading ecological problem. By killing natural predators, they can actually worsen rodent issues over time while causing prolonged and painful deaths for non-target animals. HB 1018 takes a practical and responsible approach. It limits the most dangerous compounds while preserving reasonable exceptions for documented public health emergencies, critical infrastructure, and essential agricultural uses when other methods have failed. The bill encourages safer, more targeted rodent management strategies without compromising human health or food safety. New Hampshire’s wildlife is an important public resource and a key part of natural pest control. Reducing the routine use of these highly toxic, long-lasting poisons protects ecosystems, pets, and communities while supporting more effective long-term rodent management. I respectfully urge you to support HB 1018.
