This bill strips the rights of the democratically elected representatives who run their municipal libraries. By removing their authority and placing it under the select board, it diminishes the democratic process and the power of the voters. Libraries are governed separately intentionally so that they can provide free and equal access to information without political interference. Local library governance should not be politicized. If a community member feels that library governance is not meeting the needs of its constituents, there is already a mechanism to rectify that-- by running for library trustee. This does not solve any real problem and is a waste of time and resources.
