We have a wonderful network of private non-profits that work constantly and intensively to feed those in New Hampshire who, without these supports, would not have enough to eat. However, as clearly demonstrated during the October government shutdown, these great organizations cannot replace the role SNAP plays in preventing food insecurity and hunger. Thousands of New Hampshire children depend on SNAP for adequate food. They too are our future and cannot continue healthy development without adequate nourishment. Among others also receiving this benefit are elders and people with disabilities who cannot work in order to earn more money for food, Would we abandon our most vulnerable to hunger and its concomitant health harms, yet push for another cut to the BET that brings truly negligible benefits to any impacted? What kind of people are we? I believe, noting the judge who freed 5-year-old Liam from detention, that cutting SNAP is also a violation of Biblical principles, and that the quote he used to clearly emphasize the gravity of the situation also applies if you fail to pass this bill: John 11:35 - "Jesus wept". I am 79 and so far, am able to afford nutritious food, However, given the constant cost of living increases well beyond my Social Security COLA, there is no guarantee this will continue. PLEASE. Pass HB 1750.
