Since moving to Silver Lake in Madison 10 years ago, my wife and I have cherished the lake’s legendary clarity, but our recent first recorded cyanobacteria bloom was a devastating wake-up call. Seeing the toxic green scum on our shoreline was heartbreaking, instantly turning a summer day into a health hazard for us. We strongly support HB 1148 because it treats cyanobacteria with the same urgency as invasive weeds. By expanding the Exotic Aquatic Weeds and Species Committee to include harmful blooms, the state provides the dedicated oversight and study of nutrient dynamics we desperately need. Silver Lake is currently working on a Watershed Management Plan with the Silver Lake Association of Madison (SLAM), and passing HB 1148 will ensure the NH Department of Environmental Services has the formal committee support required to help protect our water for the next decade and beyond.
