This bill harms students, undermines educators, and restricts the freedom to learn. New Hampshire’s public schools should be places where all students feel seen, supported, and prepared for the future—not constrained by political censorship. HB1792 would restrict educators from teaching about race, gender, and LGBTQ+ identities through vague and overly broad prohibitions. This undermines academic freedom and prevents students from receiving an honest, well-rounded education. The bill’s explicit targeting of LGBTQ+ identities is discriminatory and would harm students who already face higher risks of bullying and mental-health challenges. Schools should support all students, not erase or stigmatize them. Creating a private right of action against teachers invites frivolous lawsuits and limits classroom discussion. HB1792 overrides local control by imposing statewide ideological restrictions on curriculum decisions traditionally made by communities and school boards.
