What This Bill Does HB 1020 designates Lake Winnipesaukee as New Hampshire’s official state lake. I support HB 1020 because it highlights the vital role lakes and ponds play in New Hampshire’s identity, economy, and quality of life. As the state’s largest lake, Winnipesaukee is a major driver of recreation and tourism, supporting local businesses, communities, and jobs. Recognizing Lake Winnipesaukee does not elevate one lake over another. Every one of New Hampshire’s nearly 1,000 lakes and ponds, large or small, well-known or tucked away, supports wildlife, recreation, and the character of surrounding communities. This designation for our biggest lake offers an opportunity to spotlight the importance of all lakes and the shared responsibility to protect them. Importantly, HB 1020 has bipartisan support, reflecting a value that unites Granite Staters across party lines: protecting clean water for current and future generations.
