James Laurenzano | Oppose HB1180

The proponents supporting updating the state energy code to IECC 2024 rely on lower cost of ownership and lower utility costs to justify their position. They do not take into account the significant added construction costs associated with complying with the updated code. The updated energy codes push for near "net-zero" construction and offer little in terms of payback potential. The intent of the building code is to offer a minimum level of construction that is deemed safe and efficient. It should be left to the consumer if they should decide to build above and beyond these requirements, not through top-down coercion by the government. This is especially important given the current lack of affordability in the housing market. I am a licensed Mechanical Engineer in the state of NH and MA who does a significant amount of work in MA. I have seen the firsthand impacts of the onerous new energy code requirements in MA. Do not be like MA.
