Support HB 1635 as Written to Protect New Hampshire’s Youth Suicide is the second leading cause of death in New Hampshire for youth ages 10 to 24. As a parent, a concerned New Hampshire citizen, and a board member of Connor’s Climb, I see firsthand the devastating impact this crisis has on families, schools, and communities across our state. Too many young lives are being lost, and suicide is preventable. Early identification, education, and intervention are proven tools that save lives. HB 1635, as currently written, ensures that school personnel are trained to recognize warning signs and respond effectively, creating safer environments for students. Any changes to this bill would weaken these protections and put young people at greater risk. Students spend much of their time in school, placing educators and staff in a unique position to notice warning signs and take action. Clear, consistent training provides the guidance and confidence needed to act quickly and appropriately. Weakening this bill jeopardizes the safety and well-being of our youth. As both a parent entrusted with my own children’s safety and a board member of an organization dedicated to youth suicide prevention, I strongly urge the committee to reject all proposed changes to HB 1635 and uphold the bill as written. Our children and education professionals deserve strong, consistent, and evidence-based suicide prevention measures in every New Hampshire school. Thank you for your time and for your continued commitment to protecting New Hampshire’s youth. Sincerely, Susan Shanelaris Board Member, Connor’s Climb Foundation
