I am writing to strongly oppose HB 1830. As a parent, I find this bill troubling and inappropriate for public schools. Mandating firearms education in K–12 schools normalizes guns in children’s lives and sends the message that accessing and handling firearms is acceptable. Teaching students about firearm mechanics and handling risks increasing curiosity and overconfidence, which can put children at greater risk of accidental shootings. There is no credible evidence that classroom-based firearms instruction improves safety. Experts agree that keeping guns out of schools and reducing children’s access to firearms is what truly protects them. This bill would also divert limited school time and resources from more important priorities. I urge you to reject HB 1830 and focus on policies that genuinely keep children safe.
