I am recently and unexpectedly disabled as a result of serious illness. I am currently facing eviction – an act of retaliation from my landlords for applying for fuel assistance (which I have not even received yet). I live in a cockroach infested building with visible mold, exposed wood, and unreliable heat and hot water. I have spent many, many days and nights away trying to find assistance to understand my rights and advocate for my health and safety. All of the available “resources” are NOT accessible. 211 sent me to NHLA.. who cannot help me as they are not currently taking these cases, they alleged over the phone. NHLA sent me to 603legalaid.. who told me that my case is outside the scope of their practice and that they cannot help me. 603legalaid sent me to NH Bar.. where I have not received a call back despite numerous messages. Shaheen & Gordon sent me to several other lawyers.. with no response or the declaration that despite advertising they take these cases, that they do not. I am left with absolutely no support. This is real and this is happening to well-meaning people. I have no criminal record, I graduated a year early in college, I have always worked hard until my life was changed by something out of my control. Even when my landlords have demonstrated clear intent, willfulness, hostility and intimidation tactics because I exercised my right to apply for assistance while I apply for disability (which both are crimes) I have found no one able or willing to represent me. There are already very strict rules — this benefits absolutely no one but those landlords who wish to do harm for the sake of greed. There are no resources available for assistance. Every day NH pushes to unhouse more folks while demonizing the homeless population. It is immoral. It is cruel. It is illegal. I oppose this wholeheartedly and anyone with a conscience should do the same.
