I strongly support HB 1464. Targeting someone because of their political affiliation or opinion is no different from targeting them for race, religion, or other protected characteristics. Expanding hate crime protections to include political beliefs is a necessary step to ensure all individuals can engage in civic life without fear of violence or intimidation. This bill appropriately strengthens accountability for bias-motivated offenses.
