I oppose HB 1749. Reinstating the death penalty does not reduce violent crime and carries significant financial and administrative costs due to lengthy trials, appeals, and specialized incarceration requirements. Life imprisonment without parole already ensures public safety and accountability while avoiding the irreversible risk of executing an innocent person. Retaining life sentences is a more effective, more fiscally responsible, and more just approach to addressing the most serious crimes.
