Margaret Cowan | Oppose HB1730

I oppose HB 1730. Sexual abuse of a child is a grave and reprehensible crime that warrants severe punishment, long-term incarceration, and intensive supervision. However, extending the death penalty to all offenses involving sexual contact or penetration goes beyond proportional justice. Capital punishment is irreversible, does not improve prevention or reporting, and risks unintended consequences without improving outcomes for victims. Strong sentencing and accountability can—and should—exist without crossing this line.
