I am a Nurse Practitioner and a SANE/Forensic Nurse. My job is to help people feel safe and supported after they experience violence. Adopting this bill allows the state to provide further protections to survivors- I fully support this. This bill also fixes a shortfall in current law by ensuring rape kits are preserved for either the full statute of limitations or 20 years and people that care for survivors know that it can take many years until someone may want to come forward. Having the kits available to help support their disclosure is very important to validate their experience and support investigations. The law should also recognize that not all stalking takes place between intimate partners-survivors deserve protection regardless of the relationship to the stalker or offender. This bill helps to keep survivors safe, something that shouldn't be a question or denied.
