Legal rights are designed to protect persons—beings who can exist independently, be harmed or benefited in socially meaningful ways, and participate (directly or indirectly) in a legal system. Embryos, particularly in early development, lack consciousness, sentience, interests, and independent biological existence. Granting them legal rights stretches the concept of “rights” beyond its functional purpose. Further, often natural embryos fail to implant or miscarry without human intervention. Givi Giving those embryos legal rights makes no sense.
