I am writing to oppose HB 1737 and the death penalty in NH. The death penalty has never been found to deter criminals. It is a claim that cannot be backed up. Look it up. Housing death row people is extremely costly! Additional costs to house someone on death row are largely due to costly legal fees as most people on death row can’t afford a lawyer and multiple lawyers are required, Cases are also more complicated and trials last longer. Costs are also higher because death row prisoners need additional supervision and most are in solitary confinement. Is this something we want to entertain when NH finished 2025 over 67 million dollars in the red?
