Testimony: Opposition to Bill HB1580: Surcharge on nonprimary residences My husband and I live in Wolfeboro and also own a home in Bethlehem, NH in the White Mountains. We are almost retired. Our retirement plan is not to travel, but to enjoy our properties in New Hampshire. We spend half our time in Wolfeboro and half our time in the White Mountains. Many families enjoy our property in the White Mountains, our house is a busy place and as stated before, we spend half our time there when it is not rented. Our properties do not sit vacant, they are loved and enjoyed by us and many other people. There are not many hotel options where we live in the White Mountains ~ we believe we are providing a service that is enjoyed and appreciated by many. We already abide by the 8.5% meals and rooms tax. Since we will be on a fixed income in our retirement, more surcharges, taxes and fees would very possibly prevent us from being able to rent our property. We would not sell it, it would just sit vacant when we are not there. We do not think this is going to help anyone. Thank you for reading!
