The basis of my wholehearted support for this bill is the growing body of evidence that winter salting ends up seeping into culverts and streams and eventually flows into our ponds and lakes where it increases chloride levels and does not disappear. Its presence contributes to the proliferation of Cyanobacteria blooms and the toxins released endanger the health of humans and wildlife. There are alternatives to salting that do not threaten the health of our lakes. We must not turn a blind eye to this serious threat to the environment.
