Dear Committee Members, , The "insect apocalypse" has arrived in New Hampshire, with many beneficial species in serious decline. SInce insects are so integral to ecosystems, their loss has negative effects on wildlife all the way up the food chain. In addition, insect declines have serious impacts on food production and human health. Neonicotinoids play a major role in these declines. Mounting evidence has documented their effects on soil organisms, aquatic ecosystems, and beneficial insects such as pollinators. Like other pesticides, they are not a long term solution to pest problems, anyway. By killing natural enemies and competitors, while creating resistance in the target species, they make pest problems worse over time. A comprehensive plan for restoring ecosystems is the only rational and evidence-based way for New Hampshire to proceed. Other states and countries are adapting to life without them, there is no reason why New Hampshire can't as well. Anyone who cares about preserving biodiversity for future generations, should vote to restrict the use of these dangerous toxins.
