I oppose this bill because I believe that everyone should have access to health care as a fundamental human right, and by attempting to implement a work requirement for Medicaid, said right would be taken away from a vulnerable population. While it might seem fair in one sense that everyone should have to earn their health care coverage, there are many people for whom fulfilling a requirement like the one requested is objectively harder for them than it is for able-bodied people. Therefore, this would place the greatest burden on people whose lives are already hard, specifically in order to take away access to lifesaving treatment. I want my tax dollars to ensure everyone has access to the most basic necessities of human life, and I do not care whether someone meets any sort of “requirements” for me to believe they deserve to receive it.
