Many among us, who have, through no lack of industry, fallen on difficult times and find themselves in need of Medicaid health coverage. It may be an elderly or disabled person who must enter a nursing home. Because Medicare will no longer cover extended stays in a nursing home, their only option is to switch to Medicaid, after their assets have been depleted. There are, of course, other circumstances where the government must remember that a government does have an obligation to bring relief to those who are in need of that relief. That essential quality of government cannot be summarily discarded.
