I am opposed to this bill because the Office of Consumer Advocate is an important protection for the public, who are impacted by utilities in this state. Advocacy for the public must be protected from political influences and from the constant changes in political power. As a democracy, we must have departments that are not subject to the whims of the political winds, but which are focused on only one thing; to protect the public from unfair practices and charges of utility companies. The Office of Consumer Advocate is akin to St George fighting the dragon. Without its independence, your constituents will have no defense against over-aggressive rate hikes, unfair additional charges, price gouging, and other bad practices. Your voters deserve this protection. Do not rob them of their voice. We choose to be at the table, not on the menu.
