I was 10 or 11 years old when I learned this lesson: If you want something extra, you have to pay for it. I was attending a Catholic school, and my dad was trying to get the tuition deducted from his property tax. Of course I didn't understand all the ramifications, but I had the perfect example from my own experience: "Daddy, if you go to Howard Johnson's for ice cream, and you want chocolate syrup on it, you have to pay the extra 10 cents, right?" I don't remember any further discussion, but my father never talked about a tax deduction again. Doesn't the same logic apply here?
