This bill disenfranchises voters from the small towns in the North Country and makes no sense for schools that serve multiple towns. This bill would change the rules for voting for School Board members of a cooperative school board so that only people from the candidate's town could vote for a candidate. The Profile Regional School Board (in Bethlehem) is a cooperative school board that includes another cooperative, the "pre-existing district of Lafayette." This year for the Profile School Board elections, there is only one seat from the Lafayette Regional group of towns that is up for election. If the proposed HB 590 were law, voters from Franconia could only vote for the candidate who is a Franconia resident, those from Sugar Hill could only vote for the candidate who is a Sugar Hill resident, and those from Easton would not get to vote for anyone, because no one from that town chose to run.
