I OPPOSE the following legislation: HB-217 relative to absentee ballots; HB-418 relative to eligibility for absentee voting; HB-608 requiring moderators to inspect absentee ballot affidavits for full execution including use of a notary, election officer, or any person authorized by law to administer oaths; HB 686 requiring a voter to provide identification when requesting an absentee ballot. All aspects of the current NH absentee ballot process are very safe and secure. Sworn affidavits are required, with severe penalties for perjury attached to falsehood. There is no need for notarization or ID proof beyond what is currently required. For multiple reasons citizens can find it difficult to get to the polls, why narrow the existing reasons. How many documented instances of absentee registration or ballot fraud is the legislature aware of? These bills add unnecessary, cumbersome and costly requirements to the process that exists for the very citizens who find it very difficult, yet wish to vote. A cynic might conclude they’re real intent is voter suppression. Please OPPOSE this legislation.
