JENNIFER MESSER

Dear Members of the Commerce Committee, I am writing on behalf of the New Hampshire Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in strong support of HB 648, which would require health insurance providers to cover glucose monitoring devices and supplies for individuals with diabetes. As a registered dietitian and the president of NHAND, I work with individuals managing diabetes and I have seen firsthand the critical role that reliable glucose monitoring plays in their health and well-being. Both continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and traditional finger-stick supplies are essential tools for effective blood sugar management. Consistent monitoring allows individuals to make informed decisions about their nutrition, medication, and lifestyle—helping to prevent dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar that can lead to severe complications such as neuropathy, kidney disease, and cardiovascular issues. However, many individuals struggle to afford these necessary tools due to lack of insurance coverage. Without proper monitoring, they are at greater risk for emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and long-term health complications, which ultimately increase healthcare costs for both individuals and the state. Ensuring insurance coverage for glucose monitoring supplies will remove a significant barrier to care and improve health outcomes for thousands of New Hampshire residents living with diabetes. I urge the committee to support HB 648 and help make these essential tools accessible to all individuals with diabetes, regardless of financial status. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to reach out if I can provide any additional information. Sincerely, Jen Messer, MS, RDN, LD President, New Hampshire Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics jen@jenmessernutrition.com 603-714-8658
