As a parent of a child with a chronic pain condition, it was necessary for us to find pain relief that didn't include taking daily medication. We had also heard stories of doctors suddenly stopping prescriptions of pain medication and leaving patients with no options and have to deal with sudden withdrawal symptoms. . We were fortunate to have multiple medical doctors who were knowledgeable about alternative treatments. They suggester acupuncture, physical therapy, chiropractor care and multiple supplements. Some of the Physical therapy was covered by insurance but we were limited to the number of visits. That makes dealing with a chronic condition very difficult. We had to pay out of pocket for extra visits. We were fortunate to find an acupuncturist and chiropractor that took our insurance. We still had to pay the deductible ($ 6000) each year before the insurance would cover 80 percent of the cost of a visit. Supplements are not covered by insurance and the price of good quality supplements adds up quickly each month. By using all of these types of alternative pain treatments, my daughter was able to reduce her pain level from a consistent 8/9 to 2/3. She was able to attend school regularly, and attend events with friends again. She will be graduating college soon and that would not have possible without these alternative treatments. When she was diagnosed at age 13 we didn't think she would be able to live a life with minimal pain. We are fortunate that see were able to afford all these treatments and get her to the right doctors. Other families are not as fortunate. I am currently a member of the NH Rare Disease Advisory Committee. These statements are mine and don't reflect those of the committee. Nancy Biederman
