To the Committee: Doctors of optometry undergo rigorous four-year postgraduate education specifically focused on the human eye and its intricate functions. In many respects, our training surpasses that of ophthalmologists, who complete general medical school where ocular health is a limited area of focus. Ophthalmologists then specialize through residencies or fellowships, often shorter in duration than our comprehensive optometric education. Optometry schools nationwide are already incorporating training for these specific procedures into their curricula, preparing graduates to perform them safely and effectively. It is counterproductive to not expand the scope of practice for optometrists and acknowledge the expertise of these newly trained professionals. Many regions within New Hampshire currently experience limited access to quality eye care. Expanding the scope of practice for optometrists will significantly improve access to care throughout the state. Conversely, restricting our scope will discourage new graduates from seeking employment opportunities within New Hampshire. It's crucial to emphasize that these are relatively straightforward procedures that do not even require anesthesia. In many instances, the ability to perform these laser procedures promptly is paramount for the patient's ocular health and overall prognosis. A larger pool of qualified providers will ensure quicker access to necessary procedures, ultimately leading to better long-term health outcomes for patients. Thank you for your consideration of this vital legislation. Sincerely, Hilary A. Hamer, OD, MA, MS, FAAO
