As an environmental professional, I work with individuals who understand and protect the fundamental capabilities of animals: coyotes and bobcats who hunt, bees who need flowers for food from spring to fall, frogs who require vernal pools for spawning and make quite the racket. However, the animals people willingly pledge care for and responsibility over they do not respect enough to allow them to express their capabilities. Declawing cats is not only a painful and traumatic procedure, it also robs a being of a fundamental process in their life as well as posing a huge safety risk were the animal to get outside and need to defend itself.
