Declawing Cats Should Be Illegal — Strong Support for New Hampshire's HB 201 Declawing cats is an inhumane practice that causes significant physical and psychological harm, and I strongly support New Hampshire's HB 201, which seeks to ban this unnecessary and harmful procedure in our state. Declawing is a surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe, equivalent to removing a human finger at the first knuckle. This invasive operation often results in chronic pain, arthritis, and mobility issues due to the cat's altered gait and joint stress (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2023). Behaviorally, declawed cats are more likely to exhibit biting, aggression, and litter box avoidance due to post-surgical pain and a sense of vulnerability (Purdue University, 2022). These issues frequently lead to abandonment or euthanasia, further underscoring the cruelty and consequences of this practice. HB 201 represents an opportunity for New Hampshire to join the growing list of humane jurisdictions banning declawing, including New York and several major cities across the U.S., as well as countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia. This bill aligns with the ethical stance of veterinary and animal welfare organizations like the American Animal Hospital Association and The Humane Society of the United States, which advocate for humane alternatives such as nail trimming, scratching posts, and nail caps. By passing HB 201, New Hampshire can demonstrate leadership in protecting animal welfare and promoting responsible pet ownership. Declawing is unnecessary and outdated, and it is time to put an end to this practice in our state. I urge lawmakers to pass this vital legislation. Sources: - American Veterinary Medical Association.
